Osprey

Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

For this week's wild bird I am featuring the Osprey..I am looking forward to seeing the Osprey's return to Maryland, which should be soon.

The Osprey is one bird that I have to stop and watch when I see them.. These are some various archived shots of the Ospreys taken in various places.

The Osprey is sometimes known as the Fish Eagle or Sea Hawk, River Hawk or Fish Hawk.

According to Wikipedia the Osprey tolerates a variety of habitats near a large body of water that provides a food supply.

Adult Osprey with young.

The Osprey's diet is mostly fish.

They are awesome birds to view, whether perched or in flight.. I hope you enjoyed my Osprey images and my wild bird post.. Till next week's wild bird post..

  7. I'm looking forward to seeing the osprey too. Someone in Toronto has already reported one! But Lake Ontario has some open water. The Lakes are frozen here north of the city. Typically they are back the first week in April here.

  10. Great photos Eileen of one of my favourite birds. Ospreys have several nests in our rural area as we have a nice big lake full of fish that attracts them. I keep an eye on one nest every summer but have only photographed them once.

  47. Really interested in this post, Eileen, for your Ospreys. I once wrote a poem which included a line about a sea hawk hovering. Kind critics queried the mention of a sea hawk, and when I looked it up (or tried to do so) I failed to find it ... probably because it is an alternative name for the Osprey, which we have in small numbers in the UK. Thank you, as ever, for liking my Ickworth post.

  51. It was an osprey nest on a pylon just a short distance from the school where I taught that started me on my photography obsession. I watched the pair raise a chick over several months and saw her first flight. Unforgettable! Your photos are magnificent, Eileen. A wonderful nature/bird post!

  58. Great shots! I have never seen an osprey before, though hawks were not too uncommon where I used to live. My high school mascot was a hawk and the two "teams" for each grade were named after different hawks.
